Face to Face @ Hartlepool Art Gallery

This beautiful painting is a self portrait by Doris Zinkeisen as one of the portraits exhibited in the Face to Face exhibition at Hartlepool Art Gallery.
Painter and stage designer; with her sister Anna, Doris Zinkeisen was a familiar figure on the artistic scene from the 1920s. Best known for society portraits, horse paintings and murals of regency scenes, she was also an official war artist for the St John Ambulance Brigade and her drawings of Belsen are held in the Imperial War Museum. This self-portrait was made while the artist was on a world tour, and was mostly painted in her hotel bedroom in Sydney.
Read the rest of the blog to see self portraits created at our young people’s art session.
So, last week we held the latest art session at Hartlepool Art Gallery-(I think we really need a name for these sessions...any ideas??)-  It was great fun as usual, with some brilliant work created!
The latest session linked to the current Face to Face portrait exhibition. A fantastic opportunity to see some of the portraits from Hartlepool’s own collection and featuring loans from the National Portrait Gallery in London. It’s on until the 31st of May so make sure you get down to see it. Best of all, it’s absolutely free!
We started the session with a tour of the exhibition by artist Denise Heanes, we chatted about our favourites about the techniques used and the sort of things we can learn by looking at portraits. We also had a chance to see some of Denise’s own work; really fab charcoal portraits, beautifully sketchy and flowing drawings and gorgeous coloured collages.

Next it was our turn to put pencils to paper and try out our own self-portraits. Armed with mirrors, pencils and under the expert tutelage of Denise everyone got busy creating drawing.
With only a quick break for some well –earned pizza the evening flew. Check out some of the work!
